Chen Jun, head of the College of Chemistry (COC) of the nationally-renowned Nankai Universtiy in Tianjin, was selected as an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) recently. After returning to Tianjin from Beijing, Chen asked his colleagues and students who bid him congratulations to “conduct scientific researches by staying true to the mission and striving ahead consistently, focusing on the national strategic requirements and making constant innovations.”

Chen was fascinated by a flashlight and developed interest towards batteries when he was a boy; as a college student and a member of the Communist Party of China, he took the lead to study a less popular major and later turned down a well-paid job offer abroad and returned to China… Chen’s stories spread far and wide in the COC and he was regarded as a role model by many of his students. “When first joining the team, Mr. Chen told me to find something I’d love to dedicate myself into based on our nation’s requirements and my personal interests. Also, he encouraged me to make continuous innovations. He never criticizes me or asks me to do anything in a strict manner. He just gives the lead, thus I admire him a lot!” said Wang Jiaqi, Chen’s student.

As this year’s youngest new CAS academician, Chen Jun is also the first Nankai graduate pursuing college study here after the resumption of university entrance examination in 1977. “The title of academician comes with not only honor but also responsibility,” said Chen, “It’s a new beginning for me. And I’ll learn from the scientists of the older generation and become more dedicated to the researching and teaching of energy chemistry.”

“According to the report delivered at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, we will move faster to build Chinese universities into world-class universities and develop world-class disciplines as we work to bring out the full potential of higher education. The COC of Naikai University is among the list of disciplines in the ‘Double World-Class Initiative’ so we have to grasp the opportunity, shoulder our responsibility and achieve fast development!” As head of the COC, Chen highlighted two points when talking about the world-class discipline development. “Firstly, We have to stay true to the ‘Chinese characteristics’ and summarize our own and our peer colleges’ discipline advantages. Secondly, we ought to integrate ourselves with the world by taking the initiative in learning about the experiences of internationally known universities like Harvard and Cambridge. By analyzing the key indicators of their disciplines, we can improve our discipline development.”
